DICOVER A LANDSCAPE OF UNTOUCHED NATURE
Ten kilometres of deserted beach at the heart of the most authentic Maremma.
A thousand years old woodland with holm oaks, maritime pines, junipers, brooms, and tamarix that during the middle ages was a hunting area but also a place of choice for hermits. A European Blue Flag Beach with a gently degrading seabed making these waters extra safe. An untouched haven that has always been safeguarded is now for everyone to enjoy.
WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT THE DUNE BEACH AND THE PINEGROVE OF THE DONORATICO COAST?
These are truly unique places. Especially for those who do not believe in miracles. Because what you will find here is no less than the manifestation of one of the most extraordinary miracles of nature: evolution.
Sand is in fact one of the hardest environments for vegetation to grow. Sand has no structure and is highly saline also due to proximity to the sea and its windy coastlines. A true nightmare for plants. To survive in such challenging environment, nature has developed clever solutions: the dry sand heaths can grow a few dozen metres away from the sea in highly saline environments. These extremely resistant plants which need very little to survive block the sand and initiate the formation of the dunes making them more and more solid with their roots that can expand up to an area of ten square metres.
But these heaths don't grow alone, they have some backup: once the dune is formed, its peak is rapidly colonized by a low shrub vegetation, made of prickly and Phoenician juniper, tamarix, mastic tree, strawberry tree.
The heaths and the shrub increase the formation of dunes that create a barrier against the winds in the areas at a short distance from the sea. There in fact a more fertile environment is formed, with sheltered and richer soil where taller plants and trees can grow: maritime pines, Aleppo pines, stone pines and holm oaks that were planted here after the land reclamation (Maremma was once a swampy area along the coastline).
This untouched nature is for us to enjoy. But we must be remindful of the endless work nature has to endure to offer us such a beautiful landscape and precious environment.
